Abstract

Objective: This study aimed to determine the effects of endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS) on postoperative sleep, nasal breathing, and smell and taste changes in patients operated on for nasal polyps and chronic rhinosinusitis, using the Sino-Nasal Outcome Test (SNOT-22).
Methods: The treatment and follow-up of 42 patients who underwent ESS between 1 January 2018 and 31 December 2019 in an otorhinolaryngology clinic were reviewed.
Results: The mean age of the participants was 38.29 ± 12.35 years (range 18–69). The SNOT-22 questionnaire was administered preoperatively and at the third postoperative month. Preoperative paranasal computed tomography findings were scored using the Lund-Mackay (LM) system. The mean preoperative SNOT-22 score was 52.61 ± 13.19, and the mean preoperative LM score was 9.4 ± 5.8.
Conclusion: Our study showed that ESS is an effective surgical method in the treatment of nasal polyps and chronic rhinosinusitis. Significant improvement was seen in all components of SNOT-22 after surgery. Patient-reported measures such as SNOT-22 are useful tools for detecting changes in symptoms.
